Vitoria-Gasteiz: A smart city
Providing a safe environment for cycling
As the capital city of the Basque Autonomous Community, Vitoria-Gasteiz is steeped in history and welcomes visitors from all over the globe. The municipality — which comprises the city itself and surrounding agricultural lands, is the first in Spain to be awarded the title of European Green Capital (in 2012) and it is consistently ranked as one of the 5 best places to live in Spain.
The city has a network of cycle paths and bicycle hire stops for public use. They approached ProximiPRO with a desire to improve the saftey of the bicycle users and reduce the number of thefts.
An anti-theft system and real time tracking with beacons
ProximiPRO developed an anti-theft system in the city’s network of covered bicycle stops. At these stops, users can now acquire a beacon in the form of a small electronic license. This is then attached to their bike. Gateways are deployed at each bicycle stop which detect the signal from the beacons as they enter or leave. The information is relayed via an app providing real-time tracking data on the use and rotation of the bicycles.
